Could someone help to offer the best approach?
Situation is a client hired me to create new PowerPoint presentation for them. I use ppt for mac and the clients all use Windows. I'd like to buy a third party template and build from that, but unsure of what would be the most compatible way of doing this---what kind of template should I use? Or am I better off building the ppt(x) on a windows pc?

Thanks so much.

You really don't have to worry that much anymore. Mac and PC are pretty much cross platform if you are using 2011 on the Mac. You may have to watch out for the Fonts. I use the Mac and have had numerous client on the PC. If you client allows it, you may want to go to the client and tweak your presentation on his/her PC, just in case.
